Your credit score is in the trash. Your credit cards have all been closed by your lenders. You can't even finance a Happy Meal at McDonalds. Then you see an ad promising you a new credit file in the form of a CPN number that allows you to literally walk away from your broken credit. Here's what they're not telling you.
CPN numbers, or Credit Privacy Numbers, are 9 digit numbers that are illegal to use in place of your social security number on credit applications. They're often sold for a few hundred to several thousand dollars. In most cases, the CPN number is just a Employer Identification Number (EIN) that businesses use for reporting taxes. You can apply for one yourself with IRS form SS-4.
More advanced con artists will sell validated CPN's. This simply means they have software that checks the validity of a social security number in much the same way a merchant can tell if your credit card number is valid. They are only validating the number, not your name and umber together.
The Credit Repair Organizations Act states, "No person may make any statement… to alter the consumers identification… for the purpose of concealing adverse information that is accurate and not obsolete."
Lenders are entitled to know your true credit history. Try and fool them at your own risk.
